For the past year, I’ve been puttering away on a top secret new project called THE ANGUILLADAE EATERS. It’s a suite of poems, narrative text, photographs and performance films that surround the sexual and anthropomorphic adventures of half-women-half-eels on an ancient village of Nida in the Baltic Sea, on the Curonian Spit of Lithuania.
It’s also from whence some of my ancestors hail, which means that every time I eat unagi I feel a little more like a cannibal.
I wrote the text for this piece about a year ago, and have been building the film ever since. I spent the subsequent months sand-spelunking on various enigmatic nautical shoals of sundry land masses. There is a lot of seaweed in this film. And eggs. And eel rakes.
On 4/28 the entire piece shall premiere itself in Los Angeles at Beyond Baroque – the whole suite is a 12 minute 35mm film and live music and poetry performance.
There has been a happy collaborative union between myself and composer extraordinaire VERONIKA KRAUSAS, whose brilliant work “Jonas” for solo harmonica forms the sonic spine of the eel-suite. The Harmonica will be performed by BILL BARRETT.
And soprano HEATHER HARSTAD will be performing my text and poetry. She is a gifted artist who also performed for my work ON THE SOFA OF A SYNAGOGUE IN VILNIUS (composer Pamela Madsen) and SONDERBAUTEN (choreographer Alexx Shilling, composer Isaac Schankler).
We will be premiering this work in Los Angeles at the epic hideaway BEYOND BAROQUE, at 9pm on April 28 as part of the MISFITS AND HOOLIGANS performance evening presented by Beyond Music, People Inside Electronics, and Catalysis Projects.
