Quintan Ana Wikswo’s SONDERBAUTEN:

Wikswo’s suite of original works in literature, photography, 35mm film and performance collaboration form a powerful, luminous interrogation of how – even within the most documented genocide in human history – gender-based crimes against women are still erased, obscured, and remain taboo. In 1941, a group of women from Ravensbrück were sorted into two groups: half were selected as slave labor for the Agfa Camera factory, and half were selected for rape in the brothel at Dachau. In 2010, artist Quintan Ana Wikswo salvaged cameras manufactured by these women, and began investigating the unmarked site at Dachau where the rape brothel once stood. The resulting works are a prismatic questioning of the occluded experience of the female body in memorialization, history-making, and the wartime experience.
