FIELD REPORT: Nachtgarten at Gestapo Headquarters

June 27, 2013

Office buildings, so rarely as innocuous as they seem. I’m always curious about how a place that can feel terrible in your psyche can look so peaceful and feel so in pain. Today I filmed and photographed more in the Nachtgarten series of flowers at the various Nazi buildings in the neighborhood…the Gestapo, SS, SA, and Party buildings, and various torture sites at the old Rathaus.

Here are some snapshots during a brief break in the rain…

There are scars on the walls from where the Nazi insignia were removed, and the flag posts remain. Though empty of flags.

The flowers are so lovely at sunset, that one wonders about all the blood that was shed because of the business here. And then one finds piles of bloody tissues hidden under the roses…
