Artist’s Talk & Exhibition Tour: Sunday 9/18 @ 2pm

September 17, 2011

After this week’s performance works gala hoo-hah, and before next week’s exhibition opening reception #3 (September 27th), is tomorrow! Tomorrow, I’m giving a down-home, comfy heart-to-heart artist talk and exhibition tour this Sunday afternoon at 2pm.

If there are any under-21’s in the vicinity, I will spend some of this time showing them how to use the typewriter.

The other day, we had a boy come through complaining that somebody had removed the monitor from the creepy looking keyboard, and that the reason it didn’t work was that it wasn’t plugged in. Or there’s the belief that the keyboard is mounted directly to a printer and that without a monitor the art part is the “instant printing” function. Conceptually confusing, to be sure.

My favorite part is when they get to the end of the line and start screaming that it’s broken. Remember when the “enter” button was a big silver bar and you got to smack it back into place? And it was so deeply satisfying…

Teaching the under-21’s how to use a typewriter. In this photo, they are delighted to learn that if you type to the end of a line and the machine suddenly freezes up, it’s not broken. The expressions of joy indicate that there are few things more fulfilling in the world than knocking that silver carriage return bar over to start a fresh new line.
