My diptych of new video-integrated text performance pieces Floriography I (Bavaria, 1095) and Floriography II (Coimbra 1541) will premiere at Catalysis Projects‘ MICROTEXTUAL in Los Angeles next weekend. Curated by Catalysis Projects’ artist-in-residence Aron Kallay, MicroTextual presents works in microtonal music, text performance, and performance-integrated sculpture by some of LA’s most visionary composers and artists.
My two pieces call upon the Victorian concept “Floriography” – or “language of flowers.” It is a system in which particular flowers were coded with secret meanings, so that people sending flowers could communicate what could not be spoken aloud. This paired performance suite of my photographs and poems explores the botanical and ecological landscapes of medieval sites during genocide.
Floriography I (Bavaria, 1095) is performed by Philip Shakhnis in English and Hebrew, with text, photographs and field recordings. It is paired with Cal Arts composer David Rosenboom‘s In the Beginning: Etude I (Trombones) performed by Matt Barbier.
Floriography II (Coimbra 1541) is performed by Rafael Liebich in English and Portuguese, with field recordings, text and photographs. The piece is paired with composer Cat Lamb‘s Field (for Agnes) for voice, bass, clarinet, flute, and viola.
