FIELD REPORT: Ah, Arizona: A Recession of Compassion / War Birds IV

April 26, 2010

Ah, archives, your fragile treasures await our quests of conscience. Little images, long forgot. These white carrier pigeons headed to the Russian front, their brot-und-wasser now away long gone, their Nazi chauffeurs fore to aft ashed to ashed, and then dust-to-dusted.

Oh! What ho! A resurrection! Here we are, in the 21st century, and this missive is for Arizona and its SB1070 , with its laws long proven shameful in many languages, and incanted over many pools of blood.

What makes our revolutionary soil special? Nothing much, apparently – America the Corporation, no cause of freedom here.

Poverty unlike all else did I see amidst the magnificent vistas of Arizona. Working on the Tohono O’odham Nation, tribal lands where the American government could spare no precious pipes for basic sanitation, no resources for running water, no family services, but pocked and riddled roads sufficed just fine when there was excess radioactive or chemical waste that sought a deep ravine in which to vanish, only to later reappear as birth defects, as cancers for which the BIA provides no doctor to treat, and knows no cure.

On the Tohono O’odham Nation, many were familiar with the word “impoverished.”

We need to broaden the understanding of that word.

One population economically impoverished, the other impoverished of conscience.

We have a deficit, it seems.

Impoverished states of being crossing a variety of economies.

There are many devalued currencies. Many debts. Many loans in which the borrower defaults. Much borrowed that cannot be repaid.

Robber barons, building castles of cruelty.

We think of it as a loss of money, but this is, too, a recession of compassion.
