2/26: EXHIBITION OPENS! HEADED TO MUNICH!

The big six-month exhibition and performances of SONDERBAUTEN opens on Feb 26 at the Jewish Museum of Munich, and there’s a bit of advance publicity that perhaps folks might want to read.

SONDERBAUTEN: the special block investigates the now largely obscured memory of the remains of the unmarked, so-called special blocks, which include the concentration camp brothel.In the 1940s, many women were forced into prostitution in the concentration camp brothel in Dachau. Using historical film cameras, manufactured by female forced laborers in the Agfa camera factory sub-camp of Dachau, Quintan Ana Wikswo began to photograph the absence and obliteration of the brothel in 2010.The SONDERBAUTEN project comprises a series of photographs, 35 mm film installations, poems, essays, and live performances.

Quintan Ana Wikswo is a transdisciplinary artist working at the intersections of visual art, literature, film, and performance art. Acknowledged for her imaginative use of innovative forms of art, award-winning projects by the artist have already been exhibited at well-known institutes and museums in New York and Los Angeles, as well as in France and Germany.She lives in New York City, where she is Co-Artistic Director of Fieldshift Further.
Alexx Shilling is a choreographer and experimental film-maker who works in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Her works have been presented at the American Dance Festival and shown on MTV and 9/11 video postcards. She is Artistic Director of alexx makes dance, where she works together with Ann Robideaux on live performances dealing with the fragility of the body, its history and ability to feel and communicate.

 

Das Kunstprojekt “SONDERBAUTEN: the special block” erforscht die weitgehend ausgeblendete Erinnerung an die Reste der nicht bezeichneten, sogenannten Sonderbauten in Dachau, darunter das KZ- Bordell. In den 1940er Jahren wurden mehrere Frauen im KZ-Bordell in Dachau zur Prostitution gewungen.

Mit historischen Filmkameras, die im Agfa-Außenlager von Dachau von Zwangsarbeiterinnen hergestellt worden waren, begann Quintan Ana Wikswo 2010 die Abwesenheit und Auslöschung des Bordells zu fotografieren. Eine Folge von Fotografien, 35 mm Film Installationen, Gedichten, Essays und Live-Performance bilden das Projekt SONDERBAUTEN.
Neben den Fotografien, die Teil der Ausstellung sind und ab dem 27.02. im Jüdischen Museum München zu sehen sein werden, findet an folgenden Terminen die Live-Performance im Treppenhaus des Museums statt:
